Everything on the first page of your itinerary is inside one 25-minute walk. You pay the highest rates in Berlin for it, and half the district is asleep by 21:00.

Facts: 5 min walk to Museum Island; 45 min to the airport; price €€€€; best for first-timers, sights, business trips, couples; lines U2, U5, U6, U8, S3, S5, S7, M1.

This is the historic core and the case for it is simple: you walk out of the hotel into it. Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Unter den Linden, Gendarmenmarkt and the Holocaust Memorial are all within twenty-five minutes of each other on foot. Four U-Bahn lines and the S-Bahn cross the district, and Hauptbahnhof puts the airport express half an hour from your door.

The district is really two. West of Friedrichstrasse it is ministries, embassies and offices, and at 21:00 on a Tuesday there is nothing open and nobody on the pavement. Alexanderplatz is a 1970s concrete plaza with a wind problem, a cluster of two- and three-star chain hotels and the city's busiest pickpocket ground. The half worth booking is Spandauer Vorstadt: Rosenthaler Platz, Hackescher Markt, Oranienburger Strasse and the courtyards off Sophienstrasse, where people live and eat.

Book Mitte if the trip is short and the point is the sights. Check the address against a map before you pay: the same district name covers a street of restaurants and a street of government car parks. If the trip runs past four nights, the same money buys a bigger, quieter room two U-Bahn stops out and you lose ten minutes a day.

What works:
- Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag are inside a 25-minute walk
- U2, U5, U6 and U8 plus the S-Bahn at Friedrichstrasse, so almost nothing needs a change
- The FEX airport express leaves Hauptbahnhof twice an hour for BER
- The sights are empty before 09:00, and you are already standing in them

What does not:
- West of Friedrichstrasse is a government quarter with nothing open after 21:00
- Alexanderplatz is concrete, windy and worked by pickpockets day and night
- The highest room rates in the city for a given standard of room
- Almost nobody who lives in Berlin lives here, and it shows in the restaurants
- Building sites are permanent around Hauptbahnhof and the Molkenmarkt

## Other districts in Berlin

- [Prenzlauer Berg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/prenzlauer-berg): Recommended. Whole streets of unbombed 19th-century apartment blocks, a playground on every corner and no club scene at all. That last part is why people book it.
- [Friedrichshain](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/friedrichshain): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Berlin and the loudest nights. Book it if the trip is Berghain, the RAW-Gelaende and the East Side Gallery. Do not book it to sleep.
- [Kreuzberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/kreuzberg): Mixed. Berlin's best eating and its best-known drug park are four blocks apart. Kreuzberg 61 is calm and residential; Kreuzberg 36 around Kottbusser Tor is neither.
- [Neukölln](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/neukoelln): Mixed. The northern strip above Hermannplatz has the cheapest rooms and the newest bars in Berlin. The rest of the district has nothing for a visitor at all.
- [Charlottenburg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/charlottenburg): Mixed. West Berlin's old centre has the most hotel rooms, the widest streets and the quietest nights. It is also twenty-five minutes from the Berlin you came to see.
- [Schöneberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/schoeneberg): Recommended. Quiet 19th-century streets, Europe's oldest gay quarter and rates below Mitte's. You trade a twenty-minute U-Bahn ride for a night's sleep.
- [Moabit](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/moabit): Mixed. The budget chains behind Hauptbahnhof are five minutes from the platform and thirty-five from anything you want to look at. Good transport, no reason to walk out.
- [Tiergarten](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/tiergarten): Mixed. Berlin's biggest park, the Philharmonie and the embassies, with Potsdamer Platz on its eastern edge. Superb to look at and nearly empty of ordinary streets.
- [Wilmersdorf](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/wilmersdorf): Mixed. The quiet half of City West, south of the Ku'damm. Good value, safe, leafy, and a district almost no visitor has a reason to walk around.
- [Gesundbrunnen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/gesundbrunnen): Mixed. Wedding's eastern half: cheap beds, a major rail interchange and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Also the area Wikivoyage names for robbery risk.
