The northern strip above Hermannplatz has the cheapest rooms and the newest bars in Berlin. The rest of the district has nothing for a visitor at all.

Facts: 55 min walk to Museum Island; 35 min to the airport; price €€; best for budget, nightlife, food, solo travellers; lines U7, U8, S41, S42, S45.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The corridor from Hermannplatz to Kottbusser Tor is named in Berlin's own visitor guide for a higher risk of robbery at night, and antisemitic incidents have been reported in the district.

Only the top of Neukoelln is of any use to you. The Reuterkiez and Weserstrasse, immediately south of the canal, are where Berliners under thirty actually drink, and where a room costs roughly half what Mitte charges. Tempelhofer Feld, a decommissioned airport you can walk and cycle across, runs along the western edge. The S45 from Neukoelln station reaches BER in about half an hour, the best airport connection of any district here.

Everything south of Karl-Marx-Strasse is a working residential district with no reason to bring a suitcase to it. The area also carries a reputation that Berlin's own guide calls sensationalised, and then qualifies: unemployment is higher, certain kinds of crime are more common, and the corridor from Hermannplatz to Kottbusser Tor is named specifically for robberies at night. There is a separate and more serious warning about antisemitic incidents.

Book within ten minutes of Hermannplatz or Rathaus Neukoelln, or do not book here at all. Fifty-five minutes on foot to Museum Island means you will use the U7 and U8 every day of the trip.

What works:
- Rooms cost roughly half of Mitte's for the same standard
- Tempelhofer Feld, a runway you can walk on, is along the western edge
- S45 runs from Neukoelln to BER in about 30 minutes with no change
- The Weserstrasse bars are the ones Berliners under thirty actually go to
- Two U-Bahn lines and the S-Bahn ring, so the centre is 15 minutes away

What does not:
- Fifty-five minutes on foot to Museum Island; you commute to every sight
- Only the strip north of Karl-Marx-Strasse is worth booking; the rest is residential
- Higher unemployment and more street crime than anywhere else in this guide
- Berlin's own visitor guide warns visibly Jewish travellers about this district by name
- The Hermannplatz to Kottbusser Tor corridor is a known robbery spot after dark

## Other districts in Berlin

- [Mitte](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/mitte): Recommended. Everything on the first page of your itinerary is inside one 25-minute walk. You pay the highest rates in Berlin for it, and half the district is asleep by 21:00.
- [Prenzlauer Berg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/prenzlauer-berg): Recommended. Whole streets of unbombed 19th-century apartment blocks, a playground on every corner and no club scene at all. That last part is why people book it.
- [Friedrichshain](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/friedrichshain): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Berlin and the loudest nights. Book it if the trip is Berghain, the RAW-Gelaende and the East Side Gallery. Do not book it to sleep.
- [Kreuzberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/kreuzberg): Mixed. Berlin's best eating and its best-known drug park are four blocks apart. Kreuzberg 61 is calm and residential; Kreuzberg 36 around Kottbusser Tor is neither.
- [Charlottenburg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/charlottenburg): Mixed. West Berlin's old centre has the most hotel rooms, the widest streets and the quietest nights. It is also twenty-five minutes from the Berlin you came to see.
- [Schöneberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/schoeneberg): Recommended. Quiet 19th-century streets, Europe's oldest gay quarter and rates below Mitte's. You trade a twenty-minute U-Bahn ride for a night's sleep.
- [Moabit](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/moabit): Mixed. The budget chains behind Hauptbahnhof are five minutes from the platform and thirty-five from anything you want to look at. Good transport, no reason to walk out.
- [Tiergarten](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/tiergarten): Mixed. Berlin's biggest park, the Philharmonie and the embassies, with Potsdamer Platz on its eastern edge. Superb to look at and nearly empty of ordinary streets.
- [Wilmersdorf](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/wilmersdorf): Mixed. The quiet half of City West, south of the Ku'damm. Good value, safe, leafy, and a district almost no visitor has a reason to walk around.
- [Gesundbrunnen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/gesundbrunnen): Mixed. Wedding's eastern half: cheap beds, a major rail interchange and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Also the area Wikivoyage names for robbery risk.
