Whole streets of unbombed 19th-century apartment blocks, a playground on every corner and no club scene at all. That last part is why people book it.

Facts: 35 min walk to Museum Island; 55 min to the airport; price €€€; best for families, couples, quiet, longer stays, food; lines U2, S8, S41, S42, M1, M10.

Prenzlauer Berg came through the war largely intact, so the Altbau facades people picture when they picture Berlin are here, street after street of them, around Kollwitzplatz, Helmholtzplatz and Kastanienallee. It is the calmest central district in the city and the one with the most children in it. Mauerpark, on the western edge, holds the Sunday flea market and the open-air karaoke that half the city turns up to.

What it does not have is a single thing you flew here to see. Every sight is a ride: the U2 from Eberswalder Strasse reaches Alexanderplatz in ten minutes and the M10 tram runs all night, but on foot Museum Island is thirty-five minutes downhill and thirty-five back. Nightlife is wine bars and a handful of pubs; for a club you go to Friedrichshain. And the district has not been cheap for fifteen years, which is the standing local complaint about it.

Book it for a longer stay, for a second visit, or with children. Stay south of Danziger Strasse if you want to keep the walk into Mitte under half an hour.

What works:
- Street after street of unbombed 19th-century Altbau, which is what people come to look at
- U2 from Eberswalder Strasse reaches Alexanderplatz in 10 minutes; the M10 tram runs all night
- The quietest central district: no clubs, no stag groups, playgrounds instead
- Sunday flea market and open-air karaoke at Mauerpark, on foot from most addresses
- Family flats sleeping four cost less than two hotel rooms in Mitte

What does not:
- Not one sight on your list is in this district
- Rates caught up with the rest of the centre years ago; this is no longer the cheap side
- Nightlife stops at wine bars, so a club night means a tram back at 04:00
- Thirty-five minutes on foot to Museum Island, and the way back is uphill
- Trouble around Mauerpark on the night of 30 April, most years

## Other districts in Berlin

- [Mitte](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/mitte): Recommended. Everything on the first page of your itinerary is inside one 25-minute walk. You pay the highest rates in Berlin for it, and half the district is asleep by 21:00.
- [Friedrichshain](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/friedrichshain): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Berlin and the loudest nights. Book it if the trip is Berghain, the RAW-Gelaende and the East Side Gallery. Do not book it to sleep.
- [Kreuzberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/kreuzberg): Mixed. Berlin's best eating and its best-known drug park are four blocks apart. Kreuzberg 61 is calm and residential; Kreuzberg 36 around Kottbusser Tor is neither.
- [Neukölln](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/neukoelln): Mixed. The northern strip above Hermannplatz has the cheapest rooms and the newest bars in Berlin. The rest of the district has nothing for a visitor at all.
- [Charlottenburg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/charlottenburg): Mixed. West Berlin's old centre has the most hotel rooms, the widest streets and the quietest nights. It is also twenty-five minutes from the Berlin you came to see.
- [Schöneberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/schoeneberg): Recommended. Quiet 19th-century streets, Europe's oldest gay quarter and rates below Mitte's. You trade a twenty-minute U-Bahn ride for a night's sleep.
- [Moabit](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/moabit): Mixed. The budget chains behind Hauptbahnhof are five minutes from the platform and thirty-five from anything you want to look at. Good transport, no reason to walk out.
- [Tiergarten](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/tiergarten): Mixed. Berlin's biggest park, the Philharmonie and the embassies, with Potsdamer Platz on its eastern edge. Superb to look at and nearly empty of ordinary streets.
- [Wilmersdorf](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/wilmersdorf): Mixed. The quiet half of City West, south of the Ku'damm. Good value, safe, leafy, and a district almost no visitor has a reason to walk around.
- [Gesundbrunnen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/gesundbrunnen): Mixed. Wedding's eastern half: cheap beds, a major rail interchange and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Also the area Wikivoyage names for robbery risk.
