Berlin's biggest park, the Philharmonie and the embassies, with Potsdamer Platz on its eastern edge. Superb to look at and nearly empty of ordinary streets.

Facts: 40 min walk to Museum Island; 50 min to the airport; price €€€€; best for couples, sights, business trips, quiet; lines U2, U9, S3, S5, S7, S9.

Tiergarten is the Ortsteil west of Mitte, and it is mostly the park it is named after: 200 hectares of woodland between the Brandenburg Gate and the Zoo, with the Siegessäule in the middle. Around it sit the Kulturforum with the Philharmonie and the Gemäldegalerie, the embassy quarter along Tiergartenstraße, the Hansaviertel, and the western half of Potsdamer Platz.

As a base it is quietly excellent for a certain trip. You are 30 minutes on foot from Museum Island through the park, five minutes from the Philharmonie, and the hotels here are the large international ones with the space and the service that implies. Nothing in Berlin is prettier to walk home through in June.

The catch is that there is barely a street to live on. Outside Potsdamer Platz and the little Hansaviertel there are no corner shops, no bakeries and no bars - the district is park, embassies and cultural institutions, all of which close. Eating means Potsdamer Platz's mall or a taxi, and rates track the conference calendar rather than the season. Book it for the Philharmonie and the park; book Mitte or Kreuzberg for Berlin.

What works:
- The park itself: 200 hectares, open at all hours, free and unfenced
- Philharmonie, Gemäldegalerie and the Kulturforum are inside the district
- About 30 minutes on foot to Museum Island, all of it through trees
- S-Bahn at Tiergarten and Bellevue plus U2 at Potsdamer Platz

What does not:
- Almost no ordinary streets - no bakery, no corner shop, no local bar
- Eating out means the Potsdamer Platz mall or leaving the district
- Big international hotels priced off the conference calendar
- The park is unlit at night and not a pleasant crossing after dark

## Other districts in Berlin

- [Mitte](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/mitte): Recommended. Everything on the first page of your itinerary is inside one 25-minute walk. You pay the highest rates in Berlin for it, and half the district is asleep by 21:00.
- [Prenzlauer Berg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/prenzlauer-berg): Recommended. Whole streets of unbombed 19th-century apartment blocks, a playground on every corner and no club scene at all. That last part is why people book it.
- [Friedrichshain](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/friedrichshain): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Berlin and the loudest nights. Book it if the trip is Berghain, the RAW-Gelaende and the East Side Gallery. Do not book it to sleep.
- [Kreuzberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/kreuzberg): Mixed. Berlin's best eating and its best-known drug park are four blocks apart. Kreuzberg 61 is calm and residential; Kreuzberg 36 around Kottbusser Tor is neither.
- [Neukölln](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/neukoelln): Mixed. The northern strip above Hermannplatz has the cheapest rooms and the newest bars in Berlin. The rest of the district has nothing for a visitor at all.
- [Charlottenburg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/charlottenburg): Mixed. West Berlin's old centre has the most hotel rooms, the widest streets and the quietest nights. It is also twenty-five minutes from the Berlin you came to see.
- [Schöneberg](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/schoeneberg): Recommended. Quiet 19th-century streets, Europe's oldest gay quarter and rates below Mitte's. You trade a twenty-minute U-Bahn ride for a night's sleep.
- [Moabit](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/moabit): Mixed. The budget chains behind Hauptbahnhof are five minutes from the platform and thirty-five from anything you want to look at. Good transport, no reason to walk out.
- [Wilmersdorf](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/wilmersdorf): Mixed. The quiet half of City West, south of the Ku'damm. Good value, safe, leafy, and a district almost no visitor has a reason to walk around.
- [Gesundbrunnen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-berlin/gesundbrunnen): Mixed. Wedding's eastern half: cheap beds, a major rail interchange and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Also the area Wikivoyage names for robbery risk.
