District VIII is two districts. The Palace Quarter is the prettiest quiet corner of central Pest; the streets behind Népszínház utca are the ones locals walk around at night.

Facts: 20 min walk to Deák Ferenc tér; 40 min to the airport; price €€; best for budget, solo travellers, food, longer stays; lines M2, M3, M4, 4, 6.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The Palace Quarter west of József körút is fine at any hour. Behind Népszínház utca - Lujza, Dankó and Magdolna streets - locals avoid walking alone at night, and the Keleti forecourt draws taxi touts.

Józsefváros starts one street from the National Museum and runs east past Keleti station. The near half, Palotanegyed - the Palace Quarter, between Múzeum körút and the Grand Boulevard - is nineteenth-century palaces, renovated small streets, student cafés and rooms at two thirds of the District V price, twelve minutes from Deák Ferenc tér. Wikivoyage calls it a nice quarter with small quiet streets, and it is.

Cross the Grand Boulevard and it changes. The streets around Népszínház utca, Lujza, Dankó and Magdolna are the one part of central Pest that Wikivoyage names for after-dark avoidance - shady rather than dangerous, in its words, and CCTV-monitored, but not somewhere to walk home through at 02:00. This is also where the cheapest "central Budapest" listings are.

A booking site shows you both halves as District VIII, at similar prices, with the same photos of the National Museum. The dividing line is the Grand Boulevard: József körút. Check which side your street is on before you book, and if you are near Keleti, treat the station forecourt as a place to leave rather than to linger.

What works:
- The Palace Quarter is 12 minutes from Deák Ferenc tér at a third off the price
- M2, M3 and M4 all serve the district, plus trams 4 and 6
- Keleti station means direct trains to Vienna and the airport bus route
- Student cafés and the Corvin cinema quarter keep prices honest
- The National Museum garden is the best free green space in central Pest

What does not:
- Everything east of József körút is a different district in practice
- Lujza, Dankó and Magdolna streets are not a night-time walk
- The Keleti forecourt attracts taxi touts and rough sleeping
- Cheap listings sold as "central" are usually in the outer half
- Népszínház utca is run-down and unlit for long stretches after dark

## Other districts in Budapest

- [Belváros-Lipótváros](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/belvaros-lipotvaros): Recommended. District V is the centre in every sense: Parliament, the Basilica, the river and all four metro lines. You pay Vienna prices for it and you eat badly if you stay on Váci utca.
- [Terézváros](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/terezvaros): Recommended. District VI runs from the Opera up Andrássy út to Heroes' Square and the Széchenyi baths. Central prices minus a third, and the M1 does the walking.
- [Erzsébetváros](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/erzsebetvaros): Mixed. District VII is the old Jewish Quarter and the ruin bar district at the same address. Two square kilometres, the best food in Budapest, and no sleep on a Saturday.
- [Ferencváros](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/ferencvaros): Recommended. District IX is the Great Market Hall, Ráday utca and half the District V price. Stay inside the Grand Boulevard; the district runs a long way south of it.
- [Várkerület](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/varkerulet): Mixed. District I is Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and the best view in Hungary. It is also the most expensive district, the steepest, and empty of restaurants after 21:00.
- [Újbuda](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/ujbuda): Mixed. District XI is 33 km² of Buda. The Gellért baths and Bartók Béla út are worth booking; the rest of it is suburbs, and a hotel listed as District XI can be 10 km out.
- [Angyalföld](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-budapest/angyalfold): Recommended. The southern end of District XIII, Újlipótváros, is where people who live in Budapest would stay: 1930s streets, real restaurants, the Parliament 15 minutes away. The north is not.
