Verdict: Mixed. Fine for some travellers, wrong for others.

The valley behind the archaeological museum: catacombs, baroque staircases and the cheapest rooms within walking distance of the old town. The walk is uphill.

Facts: 20 min walk to the centro storico; 30 min to the airport; 35 min to the beach; price €€; best for budget, food, longer stays; lines Metro 1, Metro 2.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The Sanità is worked and lived in by day and named in the standard advice as a district to be out of after dark. Take the main lit routes back from Museo rather than cutting through the lanes.

The Rione Sanità sits in a hollow north of the archaeological museum, cut off from the centre in 1809, when Murat's road to Capodimonte was carried over it on a bridge. That accident is the whole character of the district: you go down into it, and it has been left to itself ever since. What is down there is the Palazzo dello Spagnolo staircase, the San Gennaro and San Gaudioso catacombs, the Fontanelle ossuary and a food scene locals rate above anything on Spaccanapoli.

Above it, the hill climbs to Capodimonte - the Bourbon palace with the Farnese collection, in 130 hectares of park. Getting up there is a bus, which in Naples is not a plan you build a day around.

The money argument is real. Rooms here run well below the centre for the same standard, and Museo on Line 1 is at the southern edge, twenty minutes' walk from Piazza del Gesù. The rest of the zone has no metro, and the catch is the return trip: everything is a climb at the end of the day, the lighting thins out quickly, and the streets empty early. This is a district that rewards a second visit to Naples and punishes a first one.

What works:
- Rooms run well below the old town for the same standard
- Catacombs of San Gennaro, Fontanelle and Palazzo dello Spagnolo are all here
- Museo and Materdei on Line 1 are on the southern edge of the zone
- Capodimonte's collection and park are the best day out in northern Naples
- The eating is local, cheap and not aimed at anybody's day trip

What does not:
- Every trip home from the centre ends in a climb of twenty minutes
- Beyond the southern edge the zone has no metro and buses are the option
- Streets empty early and the lighting is poor once you leave the main lanes
- Capodimonte itself is a bus ride from where the rooms are
- First-time visitors will spend the saving on taxis within three days

## Other districts in Naples

- [Toledo & the Quartieri Spagnoli](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/toledo-quartieri-spagnoli): Recommended. Via Toledo, the alley grid above it, and the western half of the old town down to the port. The best-connected place to sleep in Naples, and the loudest.
- [Chiaia, Santa Lucia & Posillipo](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/chiaia-santa-lucia-posillipo): Recommended. The royal city and the seafront: Piazza del Plebiscito, the Galleria, the Santa Lucia hotel strip and the Capri ferries. You pay the highest rates in Naples for it.
- [San Lorenzo & Piazza Garibaldi](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/san-lorenzo-garibaldi): Mixed. Via dei Tribunali, the Duomo and Napoli Sotterranea at one end; the central station and the cheapest beds in the city at the other. Which end you book decides the trip.
- [Vomero & Arenella](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/vomero-arenella): Mixed. A quiet grid on the hill 100 m above the centre, with Castel Sant'Elmo and the best view of the bay. You will ride a funicular every day of the trip.
- [Fuorigrotta & Bagnoli](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/fuorigrotta-bagnoli): Avoid. Cheap rooms on the far side of the hill, by the stadium and a dismantled steelworks. It looks close to Naples on the map and it is a tunnel and 20 minutes away.
