Via Toledo, the alley grid above it, and the western half of the old town down to the port. The best-connected place to sleep in Naples, and the loudest.

Facts: 8 min walk to the centro storico; 25 min to the airport; 20 min to the beach; price €€€; best for first-timers, sights, food, nightlife; lines Metro 1, Metro 2, Funicolare C, Tram 1, Tram 4.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The lit, busy lanes of the Quartieri are fine late; the unlit ones above them are not, and the Piazza Mercato end empties after dark. Book on or just off Via Toledo and the question does not arise.

This is the half of the centre most people mean when they say they want to stay in Naples. Via Toledo runs through the middle of it, with Line 1 at Toledo, Dante and Università, and Piazza del Gesù, San Domenico Maggiore and the Cappella Sansevero are all a few minutes on foot. Walk east and you are on Spaccanapoli; walk south and you are at Piazza Municipio and the ferries in fifteen minutes.

The Quartieri Spagnoli are the grid of lanes climbing west off Via Toledo. They are 16th-century barracks streets, four storeys of washing lines and scooters, and they are now full of rooms because they are the cheapest thing this close to everything. The busy lanes with the restaurants and the Maradona mural stay busy late. Three turns further up, they do not, and that is the part the safety advice is about.

The far end of the zone is a different proposition again. Around Piazza Mercato and Porta Nolana the buildings are the same age and the street is a market by day and empty at night. Porta Nolana is where the Circumvesuviana leaves for Pompeii and Sorrento, which is the one reason to book down there.

The real cost of this zone is sleep. Scooters use the alleys as through routes, deliveries start early, and single glazing is normal. Ask what the room faces before you book, not after.

What works:
- Line 1 at Toledo, Dante and Università, and Line 2 at Montesanto
- Spaccanapoli, the Gesù and the Cappella Sansevero are all on foot
- Fifteen minutes downhill to Piazza Municipio and the Capri ferries
- Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii start at Porta Nolana in this zone
- Rooms in the Quartieri run below anything comparable in Chiaia

What does not:
- Scooters run the alleys until late and glazing is usually single
- The upper Quartieri lanes are unlit and locals do not walk them at night
- Spaccanapoli is shoulder to shoulder from mid-morning to late evening
- The Mercato and Porta Nolana end empties out completely after dark
- Some cheap rooms here are converted ground-floor bassi with no real window

## Other districts in Naples

- [Chiaia, Santa Lucia & Posillipo](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/chiaia-santa-lucia-posillipo): Recommended. The royal city and the seafront: Piazza del Plebiscito, the Galleria, the Santa Lucia hotel strip and the Capri ferries. You pay the highest rates in Naples for it.
- [San Lorenzo & Piazza Garibaldi](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/san-lorenzo-garibaldi): Mixed. Via dei Tribunali, the Duomo and Napoli Sotterranea at one end; the central station and the cheapest beds in the city at the other. Which end you book decides the trip.
- [Vomero & Arenella](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/vomero-arenella): Mixed. A quiet grid on the hill 100 m above the centre, with Castel Sant'Elmo and the best view of the bay. You will ride a funicular every day of the trip.
- [Sanità & Capodimonte](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/sanita-capodimonte): Mixed. The valley behind the archaeological museum: catacombs, baroque staircases and the cheapest rooms within walking distance of the old town. The walk is uphill.
- [Fuorigrotta & Bagnoli](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-naples/fuorigrotta-bagnoli): Avoid. Cheap rooms on the far side of the hill, by the stadium and a dismantled steelworks. It looks close to Naples on the map and it is a tunnel and 20 minutes away.
