Ullevål, Nydalen and the student halls up towards Sognsvann. Cheap beds on the metro, a football stadium, and no city around them.

Facts: 50 min walk to Karl Johans gate; 35 min to the airport; price €€; best for budget, quiet, longer stays; lines 3, 4, 5, 11.

Nordre Aker is the wedge north of Ring 3: the Blindern university campus, Ullevål Hageby, Nydalen and Storo, then Tåsen, Kringsjå and Grefsen climbing to the forest edge at Sognsvann. It holds the national football stadium, the biggest campus in Norway and a business park, and this is where Oslo's cheap chain rooms and summer hostel beds actually are.

The price is real and so is the transport - the Ring line through Storo and Nydalen and the Sognsvann line through Ullevål stadion both reach the centre in ten to fifteen minutes. What you do not get is a place to be. These are 1930s garden-suburb streets and 1990s office blocks: no square, no restaurant row, nothing open late, and a long walk between anything.

Book it for one reason only: you are here in summer, everything central is full or absurd, and a metro ride twice a day is worth two hundred kroner a night. The forest at Sognsvann and the Akerselva path from Frysja down through Nydalen are genuinely good, and they are the only sightseeing this borough has.

What works:
- Cheapest chain and hostel beds in Oslo outside Grønland
- Ring line and Sognsvann line reach the centre in 10 to 15 minutes
- Sognsvann lake and the Nordmarka forest start at the last metro stop
- Genuinely quiet, safe and residential at every hour

What does not:
- No centre of its own: garden suburbs and office parks, nothing open late
- About 50 minutes on foot to Karl Johans gate, and it is a climb back
- Nothing on a sightseeing list is here except a football stadium
- Long walks between stations, which is a different thing in January

## Other districts in Oslo

- [Sentrum](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/sentrum): Recommended. The whole of Karl Johans gate, the Palace, the fortress and the Central Station in one small borough. About a thousand people live here, and you will feel it after 22:00.
- [St. Hanshaugen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/st-hanshaugen): Recommended. Central Oslo with people living in it. Twelve minutes downhill to Karl Johans gate, and the shops on your street are open when you come back.
- [Frogner](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/frogner): Recommended. The wealthy west: Vigeland park, Majorstuen, Aker Brygge and the Bygdøy museums. Wide, quiet streets and the most expensive food in Norway.
- [Grünerløkka](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/grunerlokka): Recommended. Oslo's drinking and eating district, in a grid of 1890s tenements twenty minutes north of the centre. Cheaper than the west, and loud until 03:00 at weekends.
- [Gamle Oslo](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/gamle-oslo): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Oslo, and the one district Norwegian police name. The Opera, the Munch and Grønland's food streets are all in it, and so is the drug market.
- [Sagene](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/sagene): Mixed. Torshov and Bjølsen, one ring road north of Grünerløkka. The same 1890s tenements for less money, and half an hour on foot from Karl Johans gate.
- [Ullern](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/ullern): Avoid. Skøyen's office towers and the villa hills above them. Four minutes from the airport train and 55 minutes on foot from anything you came to see.
- [Vestre Aker](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-oslo/vestre-aker): Avoid. Holmenkollen, Vinderen and the forest above them. Two famous hotels with a view of Oslo, 20 to 30 minutes on one metro line from anything you can do in it.
