Verdict: Avoid. Cheap for a reason. Read the cons first.

The long-distance station and very little else. The cheapest rooms in Porto, 3 km east of São Bento, in a district being rebuilt around a bus terminal and a car park.

Facts: 40 min walk to Avenida dos Aliados; 40 min to the airport; 45 min to the beach; price €; best for budget; lines A, B, C, E, F.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The residential streets between the station and Rua Pinto Bessa are unlit and empty after about 21:00, which is exactly the stretch the walk back from the centre crosses. Take the metro or a taxi instead of walking up.

Every Alfa Pendular and Intercidades train from Lisbon stops at Campanhã rather than at São Bento, the intercity bus terminal moved here, and the metro interchange sits on top of both. That is the whole case for Campanhã, and it is a case for passing through it. The rooms are the cheapest in the city because the district is 3 km east of the centre, uphill on the way back, and largely a building site while the new terminal and its surroundings go up.

There is nothing to walk to once the bag is down. The Estádio do Dragão is ten minutes away and empty on 340 days of the year. The streets between the station and Rua Pinto Bessa are residential, unlit and deserted after about nine in the evening, which matters mostly because the walk down into the centre goes through them.

The good news is that the fix is free: a long-distance ticket includes the five-minute local train on to São Bento. Use it, and sleep in the centre.

What works:
- Every Lisbon and Madrid long-distance train stops here, not at São Bento
- The cheapest beds in the city by a wide margin
- Metro interchange and the intercity bus terminal on the doorstep
- The local train on to São Bento is free with a long-distance ticket

What does not:
- Three kilometres east of São Bento, uphill on the way back
- Nothing to walk to once you have dropped your bag
- The station surroundings are a bus terminal and a building site
- The Estádio do Dragão is dead on the 340 days there is no match

## Other districts in Porto

- [Baixa, Sé & Ribeira](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/baixa-se-ribeira): Recommended. The whole UNESCO centre in one parish: Aliados, the cathedral, the Ribeira quay and Cedofeita's shopping streets. Everything you came for is inside a 20-minute walk, and so is everybody else.
- [Gaia Riverside (Santa Marinha)](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/gaia-riverside): Mixed. The port lodges, the cable car and the postcard view of Porto - which is the catch, because the postcard is of the opposite bank. You sleep 15 minutes and one bridge from what you came to see.
- [Bonfim](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/bonfim): Mixed. The cheap side of the centre: 15 minutes east of Aliados on a rare flat walk, five metro lines at Campo 24 de Agosto, and streets that the renovation money has not reached yet.
- [Boavista & Massarelos](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/boavista-massarelos): Mixed. Porto's business address: the big Avenida da Boavista hotels, Serralves and its park, and a river bank with nobody on it. Quiet, well built, and no metro station inside the district.
- [Foz do Douro & Nevogilde](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/foz-do-douro): Mixed. Where Porto meets the Atlantic: beaches, the promenade and the most expensive rooms in the city. It is also 7 km from the cathedral, with no metro station and one slow tram.
- [Paranhos](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/paranhos): Avoid. The university, the teaching hospital and forty thousand students. Good metro, the cheapest rooms in the city, and no other reason for a visitor to be here.
