Where Porto meets the Atlantic: beaches, the promenade and the most expensive rooms in the city. It is also 7 km from the cathedral, with no metro station and one slow tram.

Facts: 80 min walk to Avenida dos Aliados; 25 min to the airport; 5 min to the beach; price €€€€; best for beach, quiet, families, couples; lines 1.

Foz is the seaside end of Porto, and it is a genuinely lovely place to be: an Atlantic promenade, a row of beaches from the river mouth north to the Castelo do Queijo, low streets of nineteenth-century villas, and the highest concentration of serious restaurants in the city. Porto's own money lives here, which is why the room rates are what they are.

It is also as far from the sights as you can get and still be in Porto. Seven kilometres separate Foz from the cathedral, there is no metro station anywhere in the parish, and the connection is tram 1 along the river - about 25 minutes to the Ribeira in daylight, and finished by the evening. The Atlantic here runs about 17C in August and the wind off it is constant. The clubs on Avenida do Brasil open when the restaurants close and run to six in the morning.

Book here for a summer trip built around the beach, or a return visit that does not need the monuments. For a first trip, come for a sunset and sleep in the centre.

What works:
- Beaches and the Atlantic promenade at the door
- Tram 1 runs along the river to the Ribeira in about 25 minutes
- Quiet residential streets and the best restaurant density in Porto
- The one district where a car is genuinely useful and parkable

What does not:
- Seven kilometres from the cathedral, and no metro station in the district
- The most expensive rooms in Porto attached to the fewest sights
- The Atlantic is about 17C in August and the wind does not stop
- Clubs on Avenida do Brasil run until six in the morning

## Other districts in Porto

- [Baixa, Sé & Ribeira](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/baixa-se-ribeira): Recommended. The whole UNESCO centre in one parish: Aliados, the cathedral, the Ribeira quay and Cedofeita's shopping streets. Everything you came for is inside a 20-minute walk, and so is everybody else.
- [Gaia Riverside (Santa Marinha)](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/gaia-riverside): Mixed. The port lodges, the cable car and the postcard view of Porto - which is the catch, because the postcard is of the opposite bank. You sleep 15 minutes and one bridge from what you came to see.
- [Bonfim](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/bonfim): Mixed. The cheap side of the centre: 15 minutes east of Aliados on a rare flat walk, five metro lines at Campo 24 de Agosto, and streets that the renovation money has not reached yet.
- [Boavista & Massarelos](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/boavista-massarelos): Mixed. Porto's business address: the big Avenida da Boavista hotels, Serralves and its park, and a river bank with nobody on it. Quiet, well built, and no metro station inside the district.
- [Paranhos](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/paranhos): Avoid. The university, the teaching hospital and forty thousand students. Good metro, the cheapest rooms in the city, and no other reason for a visitor to be here.
- [Campanhã](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-porto/campanha): Avoid. The long-distance station and very little else. The cheapest rooms in Porto, 3 km east of São Bento, in a district being rebuilt around a bus terminal and a car park.
