Four-star rooms at three-star money, five minutes on metro B from the centre. The heart of the district is a shopping centre and a building site.

Facts: 32 min walk to Old Town Square; 40 min to the airport; price €€; best for budget, business trips, families, longer stays; lines B, 5, 9, 12, 15, 20.

Smíchov is the old industrial quarter on the west bank, south of Malá Strana. Anděl is its centre, three stops and about five minutes on metro B from Národní třída, with trams running in every direction. Because the hotels here were built for business travellers, a four-star room costs what three stars cost in Praha 1, and there are enough of them that peak season does not empty the district.

What you are booking is not a historic neighbourhood. The centre of Anděl is the Nový Smíchov shopping centre, the area around Smíchovské nádraží is a construction site for the Smíchov City development, and the walk to Old Town Square takes about half an hour. Na Knížecí bus station and the Anděl underpasses are unpleasant late at night without being dangerous.

It works for families, longer stays and anyone who wants space and a metro rather than a view. It does not work if the point of the trip is to wander out after dinner: there is nothing here to wander into, and the hill up to Petřín and the Kinský gardens is the only real evening walk.

What works:
- Anděl on metro B is about five minutes from Národní třída and the centre
- Four-star rooms at roughly three-star central prices, with plenty of them
- Trams in every direction, including the 12 and 20 along the river to Malá Strana
- Kinský gardens and Petřín hill start at the back of the district
- A full-size supermarket and everyday shops, which the centre does not have

What does not:
- The heart of the district is the Nový Smíchov shopping centre, not a square
- Smíchov City construction around the station will run for years yet
- About half an hour on foot to Old Town Square, so you use the metro every time
- Na Knížecí bus station and the Anděl underpasses are grim late at night
- Nothing historic to walk to after dinner - the evenings are what you make them

## Other districts in Prague

- [Staré Město](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/stare-mesto): Mixed. Everything you flew here for is inside a ten-minute walk, and so is every stag party in central Europe. Book it for two nights, not for a week.
- [Malá Strana](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/mala-strana): Recommended. The castle side keeps the views and loses the crowd at 19:00, when the day trips go home. You pay for that, and you walk uphill for it.
- [Nové Město](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/nove-mesto): Mixed. Three metro lines, ten minutes on foot to Old Town Square, and the two blocks around the main station that every guide tells you to leave by metro.
- [Vinohrady](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/vinohrady): Recommended. Six minutes on metro A from the centre, half the room rate, and restaurants that fill up with Czechs on a Tuesday. The trade is that you commute.
- [Karlín](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/karlin): Recommended. Flat, riverside and twenty minutes on foot to Old Town Square, rebuilt after the 2002 flood. Good beds, good food, and nothing at all to look at.
- [Žižkov](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-prague/zizkov): Mixed. The cheapest central beds in Prague and more pubs per head than anywhere. The core has no metro, it is a hill, and the two halves are not the same place.
