Central Station, every metro line and most of the city's hotel rooms. You will never have to think about transport, and you will sleep in an office district at business rates.

Facts: 12 min walk to Gamla stan; 20 min to the airport; 25 min to the beach; price €€€€; best for first-timers, business trips, sights, solo travellers; lines 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 7.
Safety: Mixed after dark. The T-Centralen exit onto Sergels torg, the sunken square known as Plattan, is a known dealing spot at night, and the Klara church blocks draw street drinking. It is uncomfortable rather than dangerous; walk on Vasagatan or Kungsgatan instead.

Norrmalm is the part locals call City: Central Station and T-Centralen, Sergels torg, the department stores on Drottninggatan and Hamngatan, the concert halls, and the government blocks behind them. Every metro line, every commuter train and the Arlanda Express meet inside this one borough, and Gamla stan is twelve minutes away over a bridge.

Book here for logistics. If you arrive at 23:00, leave at 06:00, or are in Stockholm for two nights and want to spend none of them working out which tram is which, nothing else comes close. It also has the deepest hotel stock in the city, which is why it is usually the district with rooms left in July.

The cost is that almost nobody lives here. This is a central business district with 4- and 5-star hotels priced accordingly, the restaurants near the station are chains aimed at people catching a train, and on a Sunday evening the streets between Klara church and Vasagatan are as empty as an office car park. Walk ten minutes north into Vasastan and you are eating with residents at two-thirds of the price.

What works:
- Every metro line, every commuter train and the Arlanda Express at one station
- Twelve minutes on foot to Gamla stan across any of four bridges
- The largest supply of hotel rooms in Stockholm, so late availability is best here
- Department stores, concert halls and the Skeppsholmen museums are all inside the borough

What does not:
- Business-district pricing: 4- and 5-star hotels from around 1,000 kr a single
- Very few residents, so the streets are dead on Sunday and after the shops close
- Restaurants around the station are chains cooking for people with a train to catch
- Drottninggatan draws crowds, buskers and the illegal street-gambling scam all summer

## Other districts in Stockholm

- [Södermalm](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/sodermalm): Recommended. The island south of the old town, and the best all-round base in Stockholm. Cheaper food, better bars, and a cliff between you and the ferry.
- [Östermalm](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/ostermalm): Recommended. Stockholm's money: boulevards, embassies, the market hall, and streets that are quiet by 22:00. The easiest district to stay in with children and the hardest to eat in cheaply.
- [Vasastan](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/vasastan): Recommended. Sixty thousand people living in the same 1880s grid as the centre, ten minutes further out. The best value in the inner city, and nothing whatsoever to see.
- [Gamla stan](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/gamla-stan): Mixed. The postcard, and the least practical place in Stockholm to sleep. Seven thousand residents, cobbles you drag a suitcase over, and drinks priced for people who come once.
- [Kungsholmen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/kungsholmen): Mixed. The City Hall, a swimmable waterfront and the cheapest beer in the inner city. Also barely any hotels and half an hour on foot from the old town.
- [Djurgården](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/djurgarden): Avoid. Sweden's largest cluster of museums on a royal park island, and three hotels to sleep in. You are booking a day out, not a base.
