Sixty thousand people living in the same 1880s grid as the centre, ten minutes further out. The best value in the inner city, and nothing whatsoever to see.

Facts: 30 min walk to Gamla stan; 25 min to the airport; price €€€; best for longer stays, budget, food, quiet, solo travellers; lines 17, 18, 19.

Vasastan is the northern half of the Norrmalm borough: Odenplan, Sveavägen, Odengatan, the second-hand and record shops on Rörstrandsgatan, and the Stadsbiblioteket rotunda. Same grid as the centre, same architecture, a tenth of the tourists, because there is no single thing here anyone flies to Stockholm to see.

That is exactly why it is worth booking. Restaurants and bars around Odenplan and Rörstrandsgatan are priced for the 60,000 people who live here, the green line runs the length of Sveavägen, and Odenplan has its own commuter rail station, so the airport train connection is one change. For a stay of four nights or more the arithmetic beats Norrmalm comfortably.

What you give up is walking distance. Odenplan to Stortorget is about half an hour on foot, so you use the metro daily rather than occasionally. The northern edge at Hagastaden is a building site scheduled to run to about 2030, and the blocks along Sveavägen carry four lanes of traffic, so ask for a courtyard room.

What works:
- Restaurants and bars priced for residents, not for visitors
- Green line the length of Sveavägen, plus commuter rail under Odenplan
- Same 1880s blocks as the city centre without the crowds on the pavement
- One of the safest inner districts, and quiet from about 23:00

What does not:
- About 30 minutes on foot to Gamla stan, so you ride the metro every day
- No major sight in the district beyond the public library rotunda
- Hagastaden at the northern edge is a construction site into the 2030s
- Sveavägen is a four-lane road - ask for a room facing the courtyard

## Other districts in Stockholm

- [Norrmalm](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/norrmalm): Recommended. Central Station, every metro line and most of the city's hotel rooms. You will never have to think about transport, and you will sleep in an office district at business rates.
- [Södermalm](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/sodermalm): Recommended. The island south of the old town, and the best all-round base in Stockholm. Cheaper food, better bars, and a cliff between you and the ferry.
- [Östermalm](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/ostermalm): Recommended. Stockholm's money: boulevards, embassies, the market hall, and streets that are quiet by 22:00. The easiest district to stay in with children and the hardest to eat in cheaply.
- [Gamla stan](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/gamla-stan): Mixed. The postcard, and the least practical place in Stockholm to sleep. Seven thousand residents, cobbles you drag a suitcase over, and drinks priced for people who come once.
- [Kungsholmen](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/kungsholmen): Mixed. The City Hall, a swimmable waterfront and the cheapest beer in the inner city. Also barely any hotels and half an hour on foot from the old town.
- [Djurgården](https://stayzones.com/where-to-stay-in-stockholm/djurgarden): Avoid. Sweden's largest cluster of museums on a royal park island, and three hotels to sleep in. You are booking a day out, not a base.
