Staying in Victoria & Attiki
Victoria and Attiki are the apartment districts north of Omonia along Patission and Acharnon: Plateia Viktorias, Agios Panteleimon and Plateia Attikis. They are ordinary, crowded, working neighbourhoods with a large migrant population, and their hotels are among the cheapest in the city with a metro station outside.
That station is the whole argument. M1 at Victoria and Attiki is two or three stops from Omonia and Monastiraki, and the rooms cost about a fifth less than the median district. On a booking map it looks like part of the centre.
It is not. Monastiraki is thirty minutes on foot, there is not a single notable sight in the district, and hardly anyone rents to visitors here, which tells you how it compares. The route that decides it is the walk home: from Plaka or Psyri it runs straight through Omonia and past Vathis Square, the blocks locals avoid after dark. Pay the difference and sleep south of Omonia.
What works
- Victoria and Attiki on M1, two or three stops from Monastiraki
- Rooms about a fifth below the median district
- Close to Pedion tou Areos park and the National Archaeological Museum
- Ordinary neighbourhood prices in shops and cafés
What does not
- Thirty minutes on foot to Monastiraki
- Not a single notable sight in the district
- The walk home from Plaka runs through Omonia and past Vathis Square
- Few visitors rent here; this is residential Athens, not a base
