Is Erzsébetváros a good area to stay in Budapest?

Mixed€€€NightlifeFoodSolo travellersSights

Mixed. District VII is the old Jewish Quarter and the ruin bar district at the same address. Two square kilometres, the best food in Budapest, and no sleep on a Saturday.

Staying in Erzsébetváros

Erzsébetváros is the smallest district in Budapest at 2 km², and the most concentrated. The Dohány Street Synagogue, the Rumbach and Kazinczy synagogues, Gozsdu udvar, Szimpla and about a hundred bars are inside a fifteen-minute walk of each other, and so are the flats and hotels above them.

That is the whole problem. The ruin bars are in the courtyards of residential buildings and they run until 04:00 from Thursday to Saturday. A room facing Kazinczy utca, Dob utca or Gozsdu udvar is not a quiet room, no matter what the listing says, and Budapest has no meaningful noise enforcement for these blocks.

Book here if the nightlife is why you came, or if you can get an address on the far side of the district - north of Király utca, or the stretch between Erzsébet körút and Keleti, which is ordinary inner-city Pest. Check the street name against a map of Kazinczy utca before you pay. The food is the other reason to come: this is where Budapest eats, from kosher delis to the best new restaurants in the city.

What works

  • Every ruin bar in Budapest is within a ten-minute walk
  • The densest and best restaurant strip in the city, at Hungarian prices
  • 8 to 12 minutes on foot to Deák Ferenc tér and District V
  • The Dohány Street Synagogue and the whole Jewish Quarter are on your doorstep
  • Trams 4 and 6 run all night on the Grand Boulevard

What does not

  • Bars in residential courtyards run to 04:00 Thursday to Saturday
  • Stag parties concentrate here, and so do the touts that follow them
  • Rooms near Kazinczy utca and Gozsdu udvar are unsleepable at weekends
  • Streets are dirty on a Sunday morning in a way the rest of Pest is not
  • Many buildings are unrenovated behind the façade, with thin windows onto the courtyard
Budapest is known for its so-called "ruin bars", found mainly in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter. They are former abandoned buildings transformed into popular nightlife spots.

Night buses and the tram no.6 passing through the city centre can be very crowded at peak socialising times on Friday and Saturday nights. You may come across aggressive drunk youngsters on the vehicles or at the stops.
