Mixed after dark
Bairro Alto and Pink Street are crowded rather than dangerous, but hash sellers work both every night and the cobbles are slick with spilled drink by 01:00.
Staying in Misericórdia
Misericórdia holds two districts a booking site will describe in one sentence and that you would not pick for the same trip. Chiado is the shopping and café half, calm by 23:00, with the Baixa-Chiado metro under it. Bairro Alto sits directly above it and is where Lisbon drinks, standing in the street.
Príncipe Real is the third piece and the quiet one: a garden square, restaurants that take reservations, ten minutes of hill between it and the noise. Cais do Sodré at the bottom gives you the Time Out Market and the train to Cascais and the beaches.
So the verdict depends on the street, not the district, which is why it is amber rather than green. If the address is inside the Bairro Alto grid, assume noise until 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday and ask about the windows before you pay. If it is Chiado or Príncipe Real, this is one of the best places to stay in Lisbon.
What works
- Chiado's shops, cafes and the Baixa-Chiado metro are all inside it
- Cais do Sodré has the Time Out Market and the train to the beaches
- Príncipe Real is quiet, green and ten minutes above the noise
- Highest restaurant density in the city, and not all of it is tourist menus
What does not
- Bairro Alto drinking happens in the street and runs to about 03:00
- Single glazing is normal here, so ask about windows before you book
- Everything is a hill; the Elevador da Bica is a queue, not a commute
- Pink Street at Cais do Sodré is a bar strip after midnight, not a photo stop
Bairro Alto is recognized for being Lisbon's centre of trendy, youthful dining and nightlife. It is a great place for a budget traveler to meet up with other travelers and feel safe when they go to bed at night - if they go to bed. Some areas are best avoided late at night because of the risk of mugging: Bairro Alto, the alleys, Cais do Sodre.
