Staying in St. Hanshaugen
St. Hanshaugen is the wedge north of Ring 1: St. Olavs plass, Ullevålsveien, Bislett, the hill park the borough is named after, and the top end of Torggata. It is the answer to the question most people are really asking when they book Sentrum - central, but somewhere that exists on a Tuesday in February.
The walk in is about a kilometre and it is downhill on the way to Karl Johans gate, uphill on the way back. There is no metro station in the borough; you get trams 17 and 18 and bus 37, all of which reach the centre in under ten minutes. For a stay of three nights or more that is a better deal than it sounds, because everything else here is cheaper: the restaurants on Ullevålsveien and Torggata are priced for the people who live above them.
The compromises are real. Nothing on a first-time sightseeing list is actually inside this borough, the hill is a hill, and the blocks nearest Ring 1 are dominated by hospital and ministry buildings that make for a dull evening walk. If you want to step out of the lobby into the view, this is not it.
What works
- About twelve minutes on foot to Karl Johans gate, all of it flat or downhill
- Restaurants on Ullevålsveien and Torggata priced for residents, not visitors
- St. Hanshaugen park is the best free viewpoint in central Oslo
- Quiet at night without being far out - Bislett is residential by 23:00
What does not
- No metro station in the borough; trams and buses only
- None of the major sights are here - everything is a walk or a tram away
- The return from the centre is uphill, which matters with luggage or ice
- The Ring 1 edge is hospital and ministry blocks, dead after office hours
A delightful public park on the highest hill in central Oslo. Great view of the city and surroundings. 1000 meters easy walk from Karl Johan street along Akersgata-Ullevålsveien past Vår Frelsers Gravlund (cemetery).
