Is Vaugirard & Grenelle (15th) a good area to stay in Paris?

Avoid€€BudgetQuietFamiliesLonger stays

Avoid. The largest arrondissement, safe and quiet and residential, whose hotels advertise an Eiffel Tower that most of them are forty minutes from. An hour on foot to Notre-Dame.

Staying in Vaugirard & Grenelle (15th)

The 15th is where 230,000 Parisians live and 150,000 work, and it was not built for visitors. Offices, 1970s tower blocks along the river at Front de Seine, the Parc des Expositions at Porte de Versailles, and a great many perfectly decent, perfectly boring streets. It is safe, it is quiet, and rooms cost less than across the boundary in the 7th, which is why the search results push it at you.

What the listings do not say is how far out most of it is. Notre-Dame is an hour on foot from the middle of the district, the Louvre longer, and there is nothing inside the boundary that a first-time visitor came to Paris for. Every day starts and ends on metro 8, 10 or 12, and the trade-fair calendar at Porte de Versailles spikes the rates without improving anything.

The honest exception is Grenelle, the north-east corner by Bir-Hakeim and Dupleix. That is genuinely ten to fifteen minutes from the Champ de Mars, and a hotel there is a reasonable way to be near the tower for less. Check the address against a map before you book: if it is south of rue de Vaugirard or west of the Parc Andre Citroen, you have booked a commute.

What works

  • Rooms cost noticeably less than across the boundary in the 7th
  • Grenelle, the north-east corner, is fifteen minutes from the Champ de Mars
  • Quiet at night and safe to walk, which the cheap central options are not
  • Metro 6, 8, 10 and 12 cross it, and RER C runs to Orly and to Versailles

What does not

  • An hour on foot to Notre-Dame; every single trip is a metro trip
  • Hotels advertise the Eiffel Tower from up to forty minutes away from it
  • Nothing inside the district is on a first visit's list
  • Trade fairs at Porte de Versailles spike the rates several times a year
On the other hand, it sees relatively little tourist traffic — but that does not mean it is devoid of attractions.

Grenelle is the quarter closest to the 7th arrondissement and thus directly neighbouring the Champ de Mars and the Eiffel Tower. Therefore, it houses many hotels advertising the proximity of the Tower.
