Is Dorsoduro a good area to stay in Venice?

Recommended€€€CouplesSightsFoodSolo travellers

Recommended. Art at one end, students at the other. The Accademia and the Guggenheim, the sunny Zattere promenade, and the only square in Venice that is still loud at 01:00.

Campo Santa Margherita is a student drinking square and gets rowdy well past midnight; Wikivoyage names it, with Campo Bella Vienna, as a place where evening trouble happens. Sleep a street or two off it.

Staying in Dorsoduro

Dorsoduro is the southern strip of the islands, and it splits cleanly in two. The eastern end, around the Accademia and the Salute, is the museum quarter: the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Punta della Dogana within ten minutes of each other, and room rates to match. The western end belongs to Ca' Foscari university, and the prices in the bars drop accordingly.

The Zattere is the reason to book here. It faces south along the Giudecca canal, gets sun all day, and is the one long walk in Venice with room to walk two abreast. From the Ponte dell'Accademia you are fifteen minutes from Piazza San Marco, which is as central as anywhere gets without paying San Marco prices.

The thing to watch is Campo Santa Margherita. It is the best square in the city for a cheap drink and the worst place in the city to have a bedroom window, and Venice's own guidance flags it for late-night trouble. Book two or three lanes back and you keep the bars without the noise. Note also that the sestiere officially includes Giudecca and Sacca Fisola across the water, which are boat-only, so read the address before you book.

What works

  • The Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim and Santa Maria della Salute are all within ten minutes.
  • The Zattere faces south along the Giudecca canal: the one long, sunny, uncrowded walk in Venice.
  • Ca' Foscari keeps a student population, so the bars and the pizza are priced for students.
  • Fifteen minutes to Piazza San Marco over the Ponte dell'Accademia.

What does not

  • Campo Santa Margherita is loud until the small hours and rooms on it are unsleepable in summer.
  • Room rates near the Accademia approach San Marco's without the convenience of San Marco.
  • The sestiere legally includes Giudecca and Sacca Fisola, which are only reachable by boat, so check the address.
  • The museum end is dead in the evening: the galleries shut and the restaurants close early.
Sometimes, in the evening and night hours, Campo Bella Vienna and Campo Santa Margherita are places for violence, so be careful if you stay here.
