Is San Lorenzo & Piazza Garibaldi a good area to stay in Naples?

Mixed€€BudgetSightsSolo travellers

Mixed. Via dei Tribunali, the Duomo and Napoli Sotterranea at one end; the central station and the cheapest beds in the city at the other. Which end you book decides the trip.

Mixed after dark

Piazza Garibaldi and the streets immediately north of it draw pickpockets and are worth crossing rather than walking at night. The Tribunali end of the zone is busy and ordinary after dark.

Staying in San Lorenzo & Piazza Garibaldi

The zone runs east from San Gregorio Armeno and the Duomo, across Via Duomo and Corso Umberto, to Piazza Garibaldi, the Centro Direzionale towers and Poggioreale. Two different bookings live inside one boundary.

The western end is the decumanus maggiore: Via dei Tribunali, the cathedral, the churches, Napoli Sotterranea and the pizzerias people queue outside for an hour. Ten minutes on foot to Piazza del Gesù, fifteen to the archaeological museum. It is as central as Naples gets and the rooms are cheaper than on the Toledo side, because the streets are narrower, darker and less swept.

The eastern end is the station. Everything leaves from here - Rome and Salerno by Trenitalia, Pompeii and Sorrento by Circumvesuviana, the airport by Alibus in about twenty minutes - and the hotels around the square price themselves accordingly. Piazza Garibaldi itself is under long-running construction and is not a place to stand about at night. Read the address, not the district name: 300 metres decides whether you are next to the Duomo or next to the bus terminal.

What works

  • Via dei Tribunali, the Duomo and Napoli Sotterranea are all in the zone
  • Every train out of Naples starts here, including the Circumvesuviana
  • Alibus to the airport takes about 20 minutes from Napoli Centrale
  • Line 1 and Line 2 both stop at Garibaldi, plus trams 1, 2 and 4
  • The cheapest beds in central Naples are around the station

What does not

  • Piazza Garibaldi is not a place to linger after dark, and the north side is worse
  • The station area has been a building site for years and still is
  • Corso Umberto is four lanes of traffic through the middle of the zone
  • Poggioreale and the Centro Direzionale are offices and a cemetery, not a stay
  • Room quality around the station is the lowest in the city for the price
Be careful around the main train station as there are many thieves in the area. Piazza Garibaldi, the large square in front of the station, is not a place to spend more time than necessary, especially at night. Generally, the southern side of the square (on your left when exiting the station) is safer than its northern part.

Many budget accommodation options are around Piazza Garibaldi and the train station, but with care you can find reasonably priced accommodation in more pleasant areas of the city.

A typical example is the train station area, which is undergoing a complete makeover (a model of how it will look is observable in the interior of Stazione Centrale), plus the excavation of a metro line connecting it with Capodichino Airport.
