Staying in Vomero & Arenella
Vomero is the planned district on the hill: straight streets, plane trees, Piazza Vanvitelli in the middle, and Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino on the lip above the city. It is where Neapolitan families live who could afford to leave the centre, and it feels like it. Arenella, further north, is the same idea with fewer shops and a longer trip.
Getting down is easy and constant. Line 1 runs from Vanvitelli to Dante in a few minutes, and three separate funiculars drop to Via Toledo, Chiaia and Montesanto. Getting home late is the catch: the funiculars stop in the evening and the metro is not a night service, so the end of a long dinner in the old town is a taxi up the hill.
Book here for a family, a long stay, or a second visit. You get quiet nights, supermarkets rather than souvenir shops, safe streets and rates below Chiaia. You do not get Naples on your doorstep, and on a three-day trip the twenty minutes each way in both directions is a real share of the holiday.
What works
- Line 1 at Vanvitelli, Quattro Giornate and Medaglie d'Oro
- Three funiculars connect to Via Toledo, Chiaia and Montesanto
- Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino are inside the zone
- Quiet at night and safe to walk, which the centre is not
- Rates below Chiaia for a bigger and newer room
What does not
- Everything you came to see is downhill, and 100 m below you
- The funiculars stop in the evening; a late night home means a taxi
- Arenella is ordinary residential with a longer trip and no reason to book it
- Restaurants here shut earlier than in the old town
- The walk down is 25 minutes and the walk back up is not the same walk
ANM also operates the four cable cars lines [...] The first one connects Via Toledo to the hilly neighborhood of Vomero, the second runs from the elegant area of Chiaia to VomeroVomero, a hilly residential area north of Chiaia and west of the Centro Storico, which due to its elevated location provide panoramic views of the bay and Vesuvius.
