Staying in Aurelio
Aurelio starts at the Vatican's western wall and runs out along Via Aurelia and Via Gregorio VII. Because of that wall, a great many of its hotels put St Peter's, the Vatican or the Pope in their names, and on a booking map they look like the neighbours of the basilica.
A few of them are. From the streets around Piazza Pio XI and the start of Via Gregorio VII, St Peter's Square is a fifteen-minute walk. Metro A at Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi is two and three stops from Ottaviano, and the district is safe, residential and a good deal cheaper than Prati.
The rest are further than they look. Aurelio is four and a half square kilometres of hills, traffic roads and apartment blocks with no notable sight in it, and the big conference hotels on Via Aurelia are a shuttle-bus ride from anything. Piazza Navona is fifty minutes on foot. It is also outside the Aurelian Walls, so the fixed taxi fare from the airport to the centre does not cover it.
What works
- Around Via Gregorio VII, St Peter's Square is a fifteen-minute walk
- Metro A at Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi, two and three stops from Ottaviano
- Residential and safe, with neighbourhood prices
- A good deal cheaper than Prati across the Vatican
What does not
- Hotels sell themselves on St Peter's; from most of them it is a ride, not a walk
- No notable sight in four and a half square kilometres
- Hills and traffic roads: Via Aurelia and Via Gregorio VII
- Outside the walls, so the fixed airport taxi fare does not apply
