Staying in Monteverde
Monteverde is the hill that rises behind Trastevere. The old part, Monteverde Vecchio, is early 20th-century villas and apartment blocks around Villa Sciarra, and at its top is Villa Pamphili, the biggest park in Rome. The official quartiere, Gianicolense, carries on for kilometres to the south-west through much newer and much duller housing.
The near end is a good place to live. Tram 8 runs from the foot of the hill down Viale di Trastevere to Largo Argentina, and Roma Trastevere station has direct FL1 trains to Fiumicino. Flats cost about a fifth less than in Trastevere below, and the nights are quiet.
What decides it is where in the quartiere the room is. Anything south of Circonvallazione Gianicolense is a bus ride from everything. Even from the top of Monteverde Vecchio, Piazza Navona is forty minutes on foot and the walk home is a steep climb. There is next to nothing to see in the district itself, so evenings mean going down the hill.
What works
- Villa Pamphili, the biggest park in Rome, and Villa Sciarra
- Tram 8 down Viale di Trastevere to Largo Argentina
- Roma Trastevere station: direct FL1 trains to Fiumicino
- About a fifth cheaper than Trastevere below it
What does not
- The quartiere runs for kilometres south-west, far from anything
- Forty minutes on foot to Piazza Navona even from the near end
- A steep climb back up from Trastevere
- Almost nothing to see; evenings mean going down the hill
