Via del Pigneto is busy and loud until late at weekends, and dealing in the side streets around it is a long-running local complaint. Stick to the pedestrian strip and the main roads at night.
Staying in Pigneto
Pigneto is the old working-class quarter outside Porta Maggiore where Pasolini shot his first films. Its centre is Via del Pigneto, a pedestrian strip of bars, wine shops and cheap restaurants that fills with Romans in their twenties and thirties at weekends. The official quartiere around it, Prenestino-Labicano, is much larger and mostly ordinary outer-city housing along Via Prenestina and Via Casilina.
It is the cheapest place in this guide to rent a whole flat, by a wide margin, and metro C at Pigneto takes you to San Giovanni for line A in a few minutes. Trams 5 and 14 run along Via Prenestina to Termini.
The price is the distance and the edges. Piazza Navona is over an hour on foot and there is one notable sight in four square kilometres. The bars are dense and loud, and the streets around them have a dealing problem that locals have complained about for years. It suits a longer stay by someone who wants to live like a Roman; it is a poor base for a first weekend.
