Staying in Parione
Parione is the middle of the centro storico. Piazza Navona is inside it, Campo de' Fiori is inside it, and the Pantheon is a four-minute walk over the boundary into Pigna. Book here and you will not use public transport at all, which is fortunate, because there is none: no metro station will ever be built under this ground, and the buses stop at the edges on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II.
The streets are the reason people come to Rome and then complain that the photographs did not do it justice. They are also narrow, cobbled and full of people from ten in the morning, and the restaurants on the two big squares charge square prices for kitchen that is a step below the same money one street back.
Campo de' Fiori is the specific problem. It is a market until lunchtime and a drinking piazza from about 22:00, with the noise coming off the stones and into first-floor windows until well after midnight. A room on Via del Governo Vecchio or Via dei Coronari is the same district and a different night's sleep.
What works
- Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori are both inside the rione
- The Pantheon, the Ghetto and Trastevere are all under fifteen minutes
- You will not need a bus, a ticket or a timetable for the whole stay
- Streets that are genuinely medieval rather than restored to look it
What does not
- The most expensive beds in Rome per square metre, and it shows
- No metro station, and none is coming: the ruins are in the way
- Campo de' Fiori is a drinking square until past midnight
- Restaurants on the main piazzas trade almost entirely on the address
The piazza is used as a marketplace during the day, and party central for college students and tourists at night. From Termini station, take the 64 bus. Be careful as this route is popular with pickpockets.
