Staying in Pigna & the Pantheon
Pigna is the rione east of Piazza Navona: the Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda, the Minerva with Bernini's elephant, Largo di Torre Argentina and its cat sanctuary in the excavated temples, and the lanes running down to Piazza Venezia. It is a fifteen-minute walk to the Colosseum, five to Navona, ten to the Trevi Fountain.
Nothing else in Rome puts this much within a short walk, and the density is the point: you stop planning days around transport and start walking out of the door into the thing you came for. The buses and tram 8 all converge on Largo Argentina, which is as close to a transport hub as the historic centre gets.
What you pay for it is money and noise. Rates here are at the top of the city, the restaurants ringing the Pantheon are the most reliably poor value in Rome, and Piazza della Rotonda has crowds and a busker until late. There is no metro station and there never will be - the ground is solid archaeology. Book a street away from the Pantheon itself and eat two streets away from it.
What works
- The Pantheon, Largo Argentina and Piazza Navona all inside ten minutes
- About 5 minutes on foot to Piazza Navona and 15 to the Colosseum
- Tram 8 and most centre buses converge on Largo Argentina
- You need no transport at all for a short first visit
What does not
- Among the highest room rates in Rome for the space you get
- Restaurants on Piazza della Rotonda are poor value, uniformly
- No metro station, and there will never be one - it is all archaeology
- Crowds and buskers on the piazza until late in summer
Perhaps the best choice for a first-time visitor is to stay right downtown, (such as near the Pantheon).
