Staying in Flaminio
Flaminio runs north from Piazza del Popolo between Via Flaminia and the Tiber. The southern end, by Piazzale Flaminio, is five minutes from the piazza and metro A. The northern end, around the MAXXI and Renzo Piano's Auditorium Parco della Musica, is closer to Ponte Milvio than to anything a visitor came to Rome for.
Tram 2 runs the length of it to Piazzale Flaminio and that is the rapid transit. It is a flat, green, well-kept district and it suits a long stay or a concert trip. The contemporary art and music venues are the best in the city.
For a first visit it is the wrong side of the walls. From the middle of the district Piazza Navona is thirty-five minutes on foot, there are few sights and few holiday flats, and on concert and match nights Via Flaminia fills with crowds and traffic.
What works
- The MAXXI and the Auditorium Parco della Musica are on the doorstep
- Piazza del Popolo and metro A five minutes from the southern end
- Flat and quiet, with the Tiber cycle path alongside
- Cheaper than Campo Marzio across Piazzale Flaminio
What does not
- Thirty-five minutes on foot to Piazza Navona from the middle of the district
- Tram 2 is the only rapid transit, and it only goes to Piazzale Flaminio
- Concert and match nights fill Via Flaminia with crowds and traffic
- Few sights and few holiday flats: long residential blocks
