Staying in Pinciano & Villa Borghese
Pinciano is most of Villa Borghese plus the quiet residential grid on its northern side, between Via Pinciana and Via Salaria. The Galleria Borghese is here, and so are Villa Giulia's Etruscan collection and the zoo. For children and runners there is nowhere better to sleep in central Rome.
The problem is the park itself. It sits between you and the centre, so Piazza Navona is thirty-five minutes on foot, either across Villa Borghese or around it, and Spagna and Flaminio, the nearest metro stations, are both on the far side. Trams 3 and 19 run along the park's northern edge, which helps for the museums and not much else.
There are hardly any holiday flats and not many hotels: this is embassies and private apartments. After about nine o'clock the streets are silent, which is the attraction for some people and the reason others will wish they had booked in Monti.
What works
- The Borghese Gallery is inside the district: book the timed entry and walk there
- Villa Borghese on the doorstep, for runners and children
- Trams 3 and 19 along the park's northern edge
- Among the quietest nights you can get this close to the centre
What does not
- Thirty-five minutes on foot to Piazza Navona, across or around the park
- No metro inside; Spagna and Flaminio are on the far side of Villa Borghese
- Very few holiday flats: embassies and private apartments
- Silent after 21:00, with little to eat nearby
