Is Campo Marzio a good area to stay in Rome?

Recommended€€€€CouplesSightsQuietFirst-timers

Recommended. The Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo and the Via Condotti shops. The best-looking streets in Rome and the most expensive rooms, in a district that empties once the shops shut.

Staying in Campo Marzio

Campo Marzio is the Tridente: the three straight streets running south from Piazza del Popolo, with the Spanish Steps halfway along and Via Condotti crossing them. It is the only part of the historic centre with a metro station worth having, Spagna on line A, and the Villa Borghese park is at the top of the steps.

It is also the quietest central district after about 21:00, because most of the ground floor is shops rather than homes or restaurants. That is either the point or the problem. Couples who want to walk back from dinner through empty marble streets should book here. Anyone who wants a bar under the window should not.

Prices are the highest in the city and the gap is not subtle: the same three-star room runs well above what it costs in Prati, twenty minutes' walk away. The eating is the weak part too. Between the steps and the Corso, the restaurants are priced for people who will not be back, and the good kitchens are over the boundary in Old Rome.

What works

  • Metro A at Spagna and Flaminio, rare for the historic centre
  • Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo and the Ara Pacis are all inside it
  • Villa Borghese park is at the top of the steps for a morning run
  • Genuinely quiet at night: the ground floors are shops, not bars

What does not

  • The highest room rates in Rome, roughly double Prati for the same star
  • Restaurants between the steps and the Corso are priced for one-time visitors
  • Dead after the shops close, with almost nowhere local to eat
  • Via del Corso is a crowd funnel from mid-morning to closing time
Hotels in the downtown area are costly, but a good apartment is a decent alternative, especially for couples and if you don't mind cooking yourself from time to time: it will save even more of your budget.
