Staying in Trionfale
Trionfale starts at the Vatican Museums' northern wall and climbs Monte Mario, the highest hill in the city. The bottom of it, around Cipro metro station, is a busy residential grid five minutes from the museum entrance, and that is where the hotels advertising the museums are.
That end is a reasonable base. Metro A runs from Cipro and Valle Aurelia, FL3 trains stop at Valle Aurelia and Balduina, and rooms cost about a quarter less than in Prati next door. The Monte Mario park at the top has the widest view over Rome.
The district is six square kilometres, though, and most of it is hill: Balduina, the Gemelli hospital and apartment blocks on steep, winding roads. From Cipro Piazza Navona is about forty-five minutes on foot, and there is one notable sight in the whole quartiere. The evenings are residential; Prati's restaurants are the nearest life.
