Staying in Campitelli & the Capitol
Campitelli is the rione of the Capitoline Hill and the Palatine, and most of its ground is not streets at all but the Roman Forum. What is left to live in is a small wedge between the Capitol and the Ghetto: Piazza Campitelli, Piazza Margana and the lanes around them, some of the quietest and best-preserved streets in the centro storico.
If you find a room there, it is very hard to beat. Piazza Navona is ten minutes on foot, the Colosseum fifteen, and the Ghetto's restaurants in Sant'Angelo are across the street. The Capitoline Museums are a two-minute walk and the terrace behind them is the best view of the Forum in the city.
The catch is supply. There are few hotels and fewer holiday flats, so what exists is priced above almost everything around it. The other edge of the district is Piazza Venezia, the busiest junction in Rome and a building site for metro C, and once the Forum closes the archaeological half is fenced and dark.
What works
- The Forum, the Palatine and the Capitoline Museums are inside the district
- Ten minutes on foot to Piazza Navona, fifteen to the Colosseum
- Piazza Campitelli and Piazza Margana are quiet by night
- The Ghetto's restaurants are across the street in Sant'Angelo
What does not
- Very few rooms: most of the district is excavations, not housing
- Priced nearly a fifth above the median district
- Piazza Venezia is Rome's worst traffic junction and a metro C building site
- No metro inside it; Colosseo on line B is at the far edge
Most of the rione is the archaeological area that takes in the Roman Forum (the republican forum, that is; the imperial fora belong to the rione of Monti).
