Staying in Nomentano
Nomentano is the district along Via Nomentana, north-east of the station: early 20th-century apartment blocks, the Policlinico hospitals and Piazza Bologna. Its sight is Villa Torlonia, the villa Mussolini rented for one lira a year, now a park with two small museums.
It works as a base because metro B runs under it, at Policlinico and Bologna, three and four stops from Termini. Prices, in rooms and in restaurants, are those of a neighbourhood where Romans live rather than one they visit.
What it costs you is the centro storico. Metro B does not go there, so a day at the Pantheon means changing to line A at Termini and still walking. On foot, Piazza Navona is about fifty minutes. Via Nomentana itself is a traffic artery, and rooms on it are loud.
