Staying in San Giovanni
What visitors call San Giovanni outside the walls is the quartiere Appio-Latino: the apartment blocks along Via Appia Nuova and the streets off it, from Porta San Giovanni down towards the Caffarella valley. The Lateran basilica itself is just inside the gate.
Its argument is metro A. San Giovanni and Re di Roma are both in the district, Spagna is about ten minutes away and Ottaviano, for the Vatican, under twenty. Line C starts at San Giovanni too. Rooms run well below the city median and so do restaurants, and the Caffarella and the northern end of the Appia Antica park are walkable.
It is still a district you commute out of. Piazza Navona is around fifty minutes on foot, there is almost nothing to see between the gate and the park, and Via Appia Nuova is loud with traffic from early morning. Book a room off the main road.
What works
- Metro A at San Giovanni and Re di Roma: Spagna in about ten minutes
- Metro C starts at San Giovanni
- The Lateran basilica is just across the gate
- The Caffarella valley and the Appia Antica park are walkable
What does not
- Fifty minutes on foot to Piazza Navona
- Almost nothing to see between the gate and the park
- Via Appia Nuova is loud with traffic from early morning
- Evenings are local pizzerias, not piazzas
In recent years, though, slightly outlying areas such as Via Tuscolana and Via Appia Nuova [...] have become a sound alternative to the far too high prices of the better-known districts.
