Staying in EUR
EUR was laid out for a world's fair that the war cancelled, in the architectural style of the regime that commissioned it. The Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, the square Colosseum, is genuinely worth twenty minutes of anyone's time. Twenty minutes is also about how long the district holds your attention.
It is not unsafe, it is not ugly and it is not badly connected. Metro B runs from EUR Fermi to the Colosseum in about twenty minutes and the Fiumicino line stops at EUR Magliana, which makes it the fastest district here for the airport. Business travellers with a conference at the Palazzo dei Congressi are in exactly the right place.
Everyone else is paying for a modern four-star room and a forty-minute round trip to breakfast. The scale is the deeper problem: EUR was designed for cars and parades, so the distances between buildings are enormous, the streets are empty in the evening, and there is no bar you would stumble into. Book here only if the price gap is very large and the trip is not really about Rome.
What works
- Modern four-star rooms at prices the centre cannot match
- Metro B at Fermi, Palasport and Magliana runs late and is never full
- Fastest district in this guide for Fiumicino airport
- Right choice if your conference is at the Palazzo dei Congressi
What does not
- Six kilometres from the centro storico: about twenty-five minutes each way by metro
- Nothing in the district predates 1937 and there are no sights to speak of
- Built for cars and parades, so the walking distances are punishing
- Empty in the evening, with no neighbourhood restaurants or bars worth the trip
If you plan to spend most of your time exploring the centre of Rome, hotels in this area may limit your options and involve you spending rather a lot of time on public transport.EUR was built in the first years of the 1940s. It was built in a perfect fascist architectural style, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fascism (Mussolini came to power in 1922, becoming Prime Minister).
